Flowers, with their diverse forms and vibrant colors, immediately stir a warm emotional connection and evoke admiration for beauty. They have inspired art, literature, music, and poetry, and have held significant roles in various cultures and religions around the world. But why do flowers hold such power over the human heart?
One key reason is that flowers are found all around the globe, making them accessible for everyone to experience — even in places as unlikely as Antarctica! The saying “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” rings especially true when it comes to flowers.
As Renato Sogueco, vice president of digital strategy and education at BloomNet, explains, “All people have an innate need to find beauty. Each person’s perception of the shape and form of flowers — their texture and density, color and variegation, uniqueness, and fragrance — all play a role in what they find beautiful."
The design of a flower appeals to our natural sense of balance and harmony, which is aesthetically pleasing. Nature often follows a universal proportion known as the golden ratio (1:618), represented by the Greek letter phi, and seen in the spiral arrangement of flower petals, the coils of pine cones, and even the structure of galaxies.
Other characteristics of flowers — such as texture, color, and fragrance — are subject to personal and cultural preferences. For example, one person may find an iris more captivating than another does.
Though science plays a part, beauty is deeply subjective. Nonetheless, we’ve compiled a list of 15 flowers, each with its own distinct beauty.
