The small, rugged isle of Es Vedrà rises dramatically from the sea off Ibiza’s south-west coast. Located roughly two kilometres offshore, this limestone monolith — with its companion islet Es Vedranell — towers near 400 metres high, making it one of the most iconic sights of the island.

Some viewpoints lie on privately owned land and have been fenced off due to safety concerns and over-crowding. One well-known lookout (“Mirador des Vedrà”) has been closed off by its owner due to repeated trespassing and dangerous activity. Before climbing to any cliff-edge viewpoint, please check access rules, tread carefully near the precipice, and respect private land.
Boat trips & alternative viewpoints
Another wonderful way to appreciate Es Vedrà is from the sea. Boat excursions depart that allow you to circle the islet, approach it by kayak (though strong currents demand guidance from an experienced instructor), or charter a vessel for a private outing. Note that setting foot on Es Vedrà itself is strictly forbidden — it is a designated protected nature reserve, and violations carry heavy penalties.
Nature reserve & wildlife
The islet is part of a protected nature reserve — both marine and terrestrial — and supports a number of rare or endangered species. Among them: the local Ibiza wall lizard and breeding populations of the raptor known as the Eleonora’s Falcon. The fragile ecosystem demands careful treatment by visitors.
Myths, legends & inspiration
Es Vedrà is wrapped in myth. Some say it was the home of the Sirens from Homer’s Odyssey, whose songs lured sailors to shipwreck. Others link it to the Phoenician lunar-goddess Tanit, protector of Ibiza. Beyond myth, many shepherd it into the realm of the transcendental: legends of magnetic energy, UFO sightings, metallic sounds travelling underwater — all have been attributed to this dramatic rock. Artists, filmmakers and musicians have also drawn inspiration from it: for example, its silhouette appears on the cover of an album by Mike Oldfield, and the 1969 film More features it as a backdrop.
